What Damien does at SkyOak Capital
Financial planning and investment management. For individuals and families in the Rogue Valley, Damien builds financial plans and manages portfolios under SkyOak Capital’s investment management agreement, working with the same planning framework and investment strategies as the firm’s Las Vegas office.
Corporate retirement plans. Damien designs and advises 401(k), 403(b), profit-sharing and defined contribution plans for employers in Southern Oregon and across the firm’s other markets. SkyOak Capital can be engaged as a 3(21) non-discretionary or a 3(38) discretionary fiduciary to the plan, and Damien works alongside the plan’s recordkeeper and third-party administrator on plan design, the investment policy statement, fund lineup selection and monitoring, and participant education.
Self-directed IRA administration. For clients who hold real estate, private investments or other alternative assets in a self-directed IRA at a specialty custodian, Damien handles account setup, transaction paperwork, monitoring and communication with the custodian. SkyOak Capital does not select or advise on the investments inside a self-directed IRA; those decisions remain with the account holder.
Business consulting. Damien works with business owners on strategy, planning and valuation, as well as preparing a business for sale or evaluating a potential acquisition. Business consulting may be provided as a standalone engagement under SkyOak Capital’s Business Consulting Agreement at a fixed hourly rate. For existing Private Wealth Management clients, certain business planning and consulting may be provided as part of the advisory relationship, depending on the scope and complexity of the work.
More extensive engagements may require a separate Business Consulting Agreement and fee.
Background
Damien’s family moved to the Rogue Valley when he was four years old. He graduated with honors from South Medford High School in 2002 before enrolling in business classes at the University of Oregon. After two years he left school, using his probability and statistics knowledge in the casino business online and in Las Vegas, NV.
He came back home to Southern Oregon in 2011, worked in sales and logistics at Naumes Inc., once the largest pear grower in the United States, from 2011 to 2013. In 2012, re-enrolled at Southern Oregon University, where in 2015, he finished his business degree with honors, a minor in psychology and a certificate in applied finance and economics. He joined SkyOak Capital’s Medford office in 2014 as an intern and passed the Series 65 in 2015 to become a full-time advisor.
Community and teaching
children going through treatment for cancer, and treasurer of the board of Community Housing in Medford which supports senior living facilities, which he joined in 2019. In 2015, he used his casino knowledge to create his own company, Gamble For Good, which pairs Southern Oregon charities with casino-themed fundraising events; to date raising more than $1,000,000 with most of that money staying local and going to children’s organizations.
After a few years of volunteering for Junior Achievement, he created The Millionaire Maker, a personal finance class he wrote and has taught locally to more than 500 high school students in the last 8 years. The curriculum is all of things he says he wished someone had taught him at seventeen!
Outside the office
Damien lives in the Rogue Valley with his wife, Rachel, and their two sons. He loves to stay active with almost any sport you offer him, especially golf!
