Background

Investment Strategy & Research

Derek leads the research and development behind SkyOak Capital’s proprietary risk-managed investment strategies. Drawing on his engineering and technology background, he focuses on creating disciplined, systematic investment processes that incorporate data-driven analysis and artificial intelligence to identify changing market conditions and manage portfolio risk.

Creator of RAAMPS

Derek developed RAAMPS — Risk-Averse, Actively Managed Portfolio Strategy — the proprietary investment methodology that powers several of SkyOak Capital’s actively managed strategies.

RAAMPS combines fundamental and technical analysis with AI-driven analytical tools to screen, evaluate, rank and monitor investments. Unlike a traditional buy-and-hold approach, the methodology is designed to actively adjust market exposure as conditions change, including increasing cash when predetermined risk and market indicators weaken.

Derek continues to oversee the research, technology and ongoing development of the RAAMPS methodology as part of his role as SkyOak Capital’s Director of Investment Strategies.

Giving back has long been important to Derek, particularly causes that support children and young people. In Southern Oregon, he has served on the boards of Hearts With A Mission, a shelter for homeless and at-risk youth, as well as youth sports organizations including Pop Warner football and Little League baseball.

Derek is also actively involved in the Loreto, Mexico community, where he and Jennifer spend part of their time. He supports local youth programs, including children’s sports, and helps provide resources and support to a local orphanage and other community needs.

Outside the office

Family is an important part of Derek’s life. He and Jennifer have been married for more than 30 years and have two grown sons. They live in Las Vegas and enjoy traveling and spending time in Loreto, Mexico, which has become a second home to them.

Outside of work, Derek enjoys golf, travel, time with family and their dogs, and exploring new places with Jennifer.
