Insurance Planning & Solutions

Insurance can play an important role in protecting a family, creating retirement income, addressing long-term care needs and preserving wealth for future generations. At SkyOak Capital, insurance planning begins with understanding the client’s broader financial plan and determining whether insurance can help address a specific need or objective.

We help clients evaluate life insurance, long-term care strategies and annuity solutions as part of their overall financial and retirement planning. When an insurance solution is appropriate, we can assist with evaluating available options, selecting coverage and implementing the strategy.

Our goal is to determine where insurance fits within the client’s overall financial plan—not to treat insurance as a separate transaction.

How We Approach Insurance Planning

Insurance planning begins with understanding what the client already owns and what risks the financial plan needs to address.

We review existing coverage, identify potential gaps or unnecessary coverage, and evaluate whether insurance is an appropriate solution. In some cases, the conclusion may be that existing coverage is sufficient or that a policy is no longer necessary. When additional coverage is appropriate, we evaluate the solution in the context of the client’s
overall financial plan.

Clients are not required to purchase insurance through SkyOak Capital or its affiliated insurance agency.

What Insurance Planning May Include

  • Life Insurance — Evaluating coverage for income replacement, family protection, debt obligations, estate liquidity, business needs and legacy goals.
  • Long-Term Care Planning — Evaluating whether to self-fund potential care expenses or use traditional long-term care insurance, hybrid life/LTC solutions or other strategies.
  • Retirement Income & Annuities — Evaluating annuities and guaranteed-income strategies as part of the broader retirement income plan, including how they coordinate with Social Security, pensions, retirement accounts and investments.
  • Existing Policy Review — Reviewing existing life insurance, long-term care coverage and annuities to determine whether they continue to serve the purpose for which they were originally purchased.
  • Estate & Legacy Planning — Evaluating life insurance for estate liquidity, wealth transfer, charitable goals and other legacy objectives in coordination with the client’s estate attorney and tax professionals.
  • Business & Key Person Planning — Evaluating life and disability insurance for key employees, business continuity and the funding of buy-sell arrangements.
  • Executive Benefits — Evaluating insurance-based strategies that may be used as part of non-qualified executive benefit or supplemental retirement arrangements.

Who This Is For

Insurance Implementation & Compensation

When an insurance solution is appropriate and a client chooses to implement it through SkyOak, insurance products are offered through SkyOak Asset Protection Group, LLC, an affiliated insurance agency owned by Jennifer Davis.

Insurance products may generate commissions paid by the insurance company. This creates a financial incentive when insurance is purchased through the affiliated agency. Clients are under no obligation to purchase insurance through SkyOak Asset Protection Group and may obtain recommended coverage from another insurance professional.

Additional information regarding insurance activities and potential conflicts of interest is available in SkyOak Capital’s Form ADV and disclosures.

FAQs

Questions About Insurance Planning

Does SkyOak Capital offer insurance?

Yes. When insurance is appropriate as part of a client’s financial plan, insurance products can be implemented through SkyOak Asset Protection Group, LLC, SkyOak Capital’s affiliated insurance agency. Clients are not required to purchase insurance through the affiliated agency.

How do I know if I still need my existing life insurance?

Insurance needs change over time. We review why the policy was originally purchased, current coverage, premiums, beneficiaries and how the policy fits with the client’s current financial, retirement and estate-planning goals before recommending whether it should be retained or whether other options should be considered.

Should I buy long-term care insurance or plan to pay for care myself?

There is no single answer. We evaluate potential long-term care costs in the context of the client’s assets, retirement income, health, family circumstances and the amount of financial risk the client is comfortable retaining. Depending on the situation, the strategy may involve self-funding, traditional long-term care insurance, a hybrid solution or a combination.

How does SkyOak evaluate annuities?

We evaluate annuities as part of the overall retirement income plan rather than as standalone products. This includes considering income needs, existing guaranteed income, liquidity, taxes, costs, surrender provisions and how the annuity works with the client’s other investments and retirement assets.

Can SkyOak review insurance or annuities I already own?

Yes. Reviewing existing policies is an important part of insurance planning. We can evaluate how existing life insurance, long-term care coverage and annuities fit with the client’s current financial plan and whether they continue to serve their intended purpose.

Does SkyOak help business owners with insurance planning?

Yes. Depending on the business and the owner’s needs, planning may include key person insurance, life or disability insurance associated with a buy-sell arrangement, and certain executive benefit strategies.
